A dishwasher is not a gentler sink. It is a hot alkaline chemical bath with high-pressure spray and a drying cycle, and small appliance parts age faster in it than in years of hand washing.
Three forces, not one
Detergent is strongly alkaline, the water runs far hotter than hands tolerate, and heated dry finishes the job. Together they strip finishes, dull metal, warp thin plastic, and lift printed markings.
Anything with a bearing stays out
Beaters with a sealed pivot, frother whisks with a shaft, and blade assemblies with a bearing all trap water where you cannot dry it. Rust starts inside the part and the first sign is a noise. Hand wash and dry those, whatever the listing on a maker’s page like Peach Street says about the rest of the set.
Printed markings disappear
Measurement lines, speed numbers, and fill marks are usually printed, not molded. Alkaline detergent takes them off in a season, and a measuring pitcher without lines is decoration.
Aluminum comes out dull and dark
Detergent attacks the oxide layer on bare aluminum, leaving a chalky gray surface that also transfers to your hands. Anodized parts survive longer, but only until the coating is scratched.
What genuinely survives
- Stainless beaters with no sealed pivot, on the top rack.
- Silicone spatulas, lids, and gaskets, which shrug off both heat and detergent.
- Glass measuring cups and borosilicate parts without metal bands.
- Molded polypropylene bowls with recessed rather than printed markings.
- Removable stainless mesh filters, provided they are dried afterward.
Never anything electrical
Kettle bases, mixer bodies, frother handles, and scale platforms hold electronics inside a housing that was never sealed against submersion. Water reaches contacts, dries into corrosion, and the failure shows up months later.
The heated dry cycle warps thin plastic
Lids and trays on the bottom rack sit closest to the element. That is where a flat lid becomes a curved lid that never seals again. If a piece must go in, put it on the top rack.
Nonstick and coated surfaces
Repeated dishwasher cycles dull coatings and open microscopic paths for water underneath. Once a coated surface starts flaking near a heating element, the appliance is finished.
How to read the symbol
Dishwasher-safe usually means it will not immediately fail, not that it will look new in five years. Manufacturers test to a cycle count, and that count is often lower than a household reaches in a year.
The two-minute alternative
Warm water, a drop of dish soap, a bottle brush, and a towel. Most of these parts are washed and dry before the dishwasher would have finished filling, and they last three times longer.
